Abstract

The paper presents some medico-historical aspects regarding the establishment and evolution of the Anatomy building of Cluj Medical Faculty, between 1888 – when this historical monument was finished – and 1923, when the reorganization and extension of the Anatomy Institute was completed, under the guidance of Prof. Victor Papilian.

The pavilion, which belongs to the Cluj university hospital complex, was in the beginning the seat of three institutes: Anatomy, Pathology and Forensic Medicine. The insufficient space for Anatomy was pointed out by Prof. Davida Leo – the head of this Institute which was part of the Cluj Hungarian Medical Faculty – in 1909, at the XVI-th International Congress for Medicine, held in Budapest. With the same occasion, Prof. Kálmán Buday, director of Pathology Institute of the same Faculty, mentioned that his department had also too limited a space. The situation was once again specified to the leaders of the Cluj University in 1919 and partially remedied by Prof. Victor Papilian – director of the Anatomy Institute belonging to the Cluj Romanian Faculty of Medicine – who built in a short time a small extension of the Anatomy building.
