Abstract

In 1825 pharmacist Hoffman József opened the first pharmacy in Marghita; it was called Cerbul de aur (Arany Szarvas) (engl: The Golden Stag). Soon after, this pharmacy became the property of the Horváth family, which managed it efficiently for three generations. From the beginning of the twentieth century and until the 1949 nationalization, the pharmacy was successively run by pharmacists Glück Ferenc, Glück Andrei, Akos Ernest and Jordan Alexandru. After the 1953 nationalization the pharmacy’s name became Pharmacy no. 15 Marghita. The managing pharmacists of the period that following were: Kenez Gyula and Pop Vilma. After the 1991 privatization, the old pharmacy became the Arnica Pharmacy, being now owned by pharmacist Pop Vilma. A second pharmacy, Madona Sixtină (Sixtusi Madonna) was founded in 1921 by pharmacist Emil Bianu; however, it had no continuity during the communist period. There are six community pharmacies currently functioning in Marghita, which are authorized by the 1990 Law on commercial societies.
