Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is a major health problem worldwide, as a result of the atherosclerotic process (ATS) that occurs in childhood. Certain types of hyper- cholesterolemia observed in children, such as familial hypercholesterolemia caused by an abnormality of the low density lipoprotein receptor gene, involve an increased risk of early ATS and premature cardiovascular complications. The aim of this paper is to present the practical aspects of running familial HC screening, as well as the prin- ciples and methods of diet and drug treatment.
