Use of Sea-buckthorn (Hippophae Rhamnoides) in the Treatment of Acute Gingivitis
Abstract
Objective. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease caused by the bacteria from the oral biofilm. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a sea-buckthorn functional food on the acute gingivitis.
Patients and method. 60 patients diagnosed with acute gingivitis were selected for this study and were randomly divided into three groups. The control group underwent scaling and professional cleaning and received then a sea buckthorn functional food for 30 days. The study group consumed for 30 days a sea buckthorn functional food while the placebo group received a placebo product with similar aspect. Modified Gingival Index (MGI) and Sulcular Bleeding Index (SBI) were determined at baseline and after 30 days.
Results. A statistically significant reduction of the MGI and SBI was observed after the treatment period in the study group and the control group. The treatment applied to the control group was statistically significantly more effective than the treatment of the study group.
Conclusions. Sea buckthorn reduces MGI and SBI and decreases the inflammation of the gingival tissue. It is helpful for the treatment of gingivitis as a complement to scaling and professional cleaning, by increasing the healing of the gingival tissue and the immune response.
