Abstract

The Royal Hungarian University of Cluj was founded in 1872. In 1881 it changed its name, becoming the „Franz Joseph Royal Hungarian University” (Magyar Királyi Ferenc József Tudományegyetem).

The university had at the beginning four faculties, with 40 professors and 11 assistants: 1. Philosophy, Philology and History; 2. Medicine; 3. Law and Political Sciences; 4. Mathematics and Nature Sciences.

Pharmaceutical education had a duration of two years; during the first year students attended the Faculty of Matematics and Nature Sciences and during the second year The Faculty of Medicine.

The Faculty of Medicine inherited the specialized staff, the rooms and the instruments of the Institute of Medicine-Surgery (Orvos-Sebészi Tanintézet) founded by the Queen Maria Thereza in 1775.

Among the first teachers one can mention: Hintz György and Issekutz Hugó, both teaching pharmaceutical technique; Ajtai Kovács Sándor was the first to teach pharmacognosy.

Starting with 1921, the Hungarian University and its professors were moved to Szeged in Hungary.

The „Franz Joseph” Hungarian University functioned in Cluj between 1940- 1945.
