Abstract

Hohe Rinne (Păltiniş) was the first resort founded in the Carpathian Mountains, the founder being an important tourism society of Transylvanian Saxons – Carpathian Transylvanian Tourist Society – S.K.V. Before the WWI, an important number of doctors, especially from Saxon community, offered their help to the functioning and development of the resort. Kurhaus auf der Hohen Rinne (the Sanatorium) was open during summer seasons only, offering balneary facilities to its guests, like similar establishments from Western Europe. The treatment was supervised by doctors coming to the resort as volunteers. Access to the balneary therapy was conditioned by a previous medical consultation to take place at Sibiu (Hermannstadt). The illnesses for which a cure period at Hohe Rinne was indicated were carefully presented by the promotional materials edited by S.K.V. Those whose illnesses could cause problems to the other guests of the resort were not allowed to be patients of the Sanatorium. Hohe Rinne (Păltiniş) resort marked an era of pioneering in the use of the high altitude climate of the Carpathians for balneotheraphy purposes
